Hair Loss

Harnessing the power of Nature and Science

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, can affect either just your scalp or your entire body, it can be temporary or permanent. Some of the factor of hair loss are heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of aging. Anyone can be affected by hair loss at any age, however it’s more common in men.

Excessive hair loss from your scalp is usually known as baldness. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness. Some people prefer to let their hair loss run its course untreated and unhidden. Others may cover it up with hairstyles, makeup, hats or scarves. And still others choose one of the treatments available to prevent further hair loss or restore growth.

Before pursuing any hair loss treatment or solution, have a consultation with your doctor to know the cause of your hair loss and the treatment options.

Androgenetic Alopecia – this is the commonest cause of hair loss in both men and women. It is commonly known as male pattern baldness. It is caused by a combination of 3 factors – Testosterone (the male hormone), age (after 20 years of age) and hereditary. It usually affects women later in life than men. Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA), or pattern hair loss, is a common disorder in Asian men and women, with reported incidence of up to 73% among general population.7

Alocpecia Areata – this usually results in a patchy loss of hair. The exact cause is unknown.

Telogen Effluvium – diffuse loss of hair which may occur 2 to 4 months following childbirth or from high fever, acute illness, physical and emotional stress and crash dieting.

  1. Have healthy well-balanced meals for optimum nutrition. Nutrients like iron, zinc or biotin are essential for healthy hair
  2. Practice good stress management
  3. Maintain good hair and scalp hygiene. Avoid using oily hair products. These help to prevent clogging and inflammation of scalp which can cause hair loss
  4. Be gentle with your hair. Dab dry your hair instead of rubbing, which can cause damage leading to hair loss. Avoid brushing wet hair. Opt for a wide-tooth comb and avoid tugging when combing
  5. Avoid harsh treatments e.g. hair bleaching
  6. Allow hair to air-dry whenever possible and minimise use of high heat tools e.g. hair dryer, hot curling irons
  7. Avoid tight pulling hairstyles e.g. ponytails
  8. Stop smoking – some studies show an association between smoking and hair loss
  9. Massage your scalp regularly
  10. Use products that may help reduce hair loss/thinning e.g. CG210®
